The Kinect is a depth camera which means beyond being a simple USB video camera, it can tell how far away objects are. When combined with the OpenNI library, it is a powerful tool that can track people within a space and even track limbs like arms and legs. In this workshop you’ll use the Kinect with Processing to track people and create interactive augmented reality installations.
Below is an example of what can be done with the Kinect. This is from a previous workshop and the content of this workshop will be a little different, but it shows what is possible.
What will you do and learn?
You will learn how to use the SimpleOpenNI library access the video produced by the Kinect camera and also process that video to detect whether people are in the scene. We will also learn how to track the joint position of a person within the scene, as called skeletal tracking.
We will cover some more advanced Processing and programming concepts like arrays and transformations.
All supporting material for the workshop will be available at learning.codasign.com.
What do you need to already know?
You need to have worked with Processing before and be comfortable with what the setup and draw functions do along with using variables. If you’ve been on our Introduction to Processing Workshop, you’ll be ok
What do you need to bring?
Though not necessary, you are welcome to bring your own computer. If you bring your own computer, download and install the Processing development environment. You should also install SimpleOpenNI. If you own a Kinect camera and the power adaptor for it to be used with a computer and not the XBox, bring it along. Please also let us know if you are planning to do this.
What will be available during the workshop?
You are welcome to bring your own computer or can use one of the iMacs available in the SPACE Media Lab. If you bring your own computer, download and install the Processing development environment and the SimpleOpenNI library.
Tea and coffee will be available during the workshop. There will be a break for lunch. You can bring a packed lunch or visit Broadway Market.
