Overview

After an over-subscribed event last year, we are running this event again with some changes following the feedback from last year. This year we will focus on processing data from the activPAL device (Day 1) and processing raw acceleration data, from devices such as ActiGraph, GENEActiv and Axivity using GGIR (Day 2). This event will take place over two days and will mainly be 'hands on' data processing on the computer supplemented with power point presentations and group discussions. You have the option of signing up for 1 or both days (£150 per day). Refreshments and a cold buffet lunch will be provided and are included in the price.

This is an event for individuals who are familiar with the basics of using objective physical activity measurement devices and either have or are currently collecting accelerometer data. The basics of using these devices will NOT be covered. This course is NOT suitable for individuals who have not used accelerometers before.

Day 1 (15/05/2017) will focus on processing activPAL data. More specifically:

  • Sharing experiences on the use of the activPAL

  • Data collection and processing considerations

  • The importance of visualising activPAL data and hands on experience of creating activity heat maps using demonstration data

  • Review and hands on experience of manual approaches to identifying sleep and non-wear using demonstration data.

  • Review and hands on experience of automated data processing (e.g., our algorithm recently published in Physiological Measurement - http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0967-3334/37/10/1653/pdf) and semi-automated approaches to identifying sleep and non-wear using demonstration data).

  • Checking of processed data and identifying problem data

  • Exploration of the range of physical activity and sedentary behaviour outputs.

Day 2 (16/05/2017) will focus on processing raw accelerometer data from the ActiGraph, GENEActiv and Axivity monitors for the assessment of physical behaviours (physical activity, sedentary behaviour (including posture) and sleep). More specifically:

  • Shared experiences with accelerometers, count-based and raw acceleration

  • Why use raw acceleration data? Monitors commercially available

  • Considerations when using raw acceleration data

    • Processing methods

    • Gravity

    • Choice of metric

    • Physical behaviour outcomes

  • Hands on experience with open source processing/analytical methods

  • Sedentary Sphere

    • Validity of outcomes

    • Introduction to the GGIR R-package for processing multi-day raw accelerometer data (package developed by Dr. Vincent van Hees)

      • G.part1 – reducing data to a manageable size

      • G.part 2 – defining physical activity outcomes

      • G.part 3 – identifying periods of sustained inactivity

      • G.part 4 – classifying sleep

      • G.part 5 – defining bouts of sedentary time, light activity and MVPA

      • Exploration of the range of outcomes

      • Raw accelerometer data moving forward – ideas for best practise moving forward.

Our workshop approach will ensure you leave the course with a thorough grounding in principles and practice of processing accelerometer data.

Due to the 'hands on' nature of this event limited spaces are available.

Workshop deliverers on the day include:

Dr Charlotte Edwardson

Dr Alex Rowlands

Kishan Bakrania

Please contact Charlotte Edwardson if you have any queries (ce95@le.ac.uk).
