At Google, product managers are the champions of users, driving products forward in a fine balance between user experience and technical requirements. The PM is a vital team member who takes on a leadership and strategic role to take a product from idea through to launch, and being a PM is an interesting way to experience an entrepreneurial job within a large company.

This workshop gives you the chance to learn about the PM world, Google style. You'll work through two real world challenges in product design and learn how to think from the inside out. Armed with this insight you'll be able to improve your product design skills in your startup, sail through PM job interviews or just look at the world in a slightly different way.

There is no need to have any experience with programming or computer science, and students and graduates from all disciplines are encouraged to attend.

Finally, this is a great chance to ask an ex-Edinburgher what it's really like working for one of the most famous companies on the planet. Incidentally, Google is hiring for student positions (and they take care of visas).

Event format (more detailed):

  • Introduction to product management: What does a product manager do? How do people become PMs?
  • Working at Google: What's it really like inside the Googleplex? What's it like to work in Silicon Valley?
  • User-focused product design: In small groups, you'll be presented with a design challenge and have a limited time to brainstorm around the challenge and then present results.
  • Analytical product design: In small groups, you'll take on a slightly different product management angle and look into iterative design and metrics--agile/lean in practice, and Google's bread and butter.
  • Wrap up: the many hats of a PM, tips on applying for PM jobs at Google and elsewhere, and further resources to improve your PM ninja skills!

The Project is delivered by a partnership of local authorities, universities, and business support organisations from the UK, France, Germany, Ireland and Belgium, with funding from the INTERREG IVB North-West Europe Programme.
