'Party time! The neglected actors of the Global South'

About: Do political parties matter in authoritarian contexts? Do they even really exist in the non-democratic regimes of the Global South? In short, is there anything worth studying? This lecture takes you on a fascinating journey of the party landscape of the Global South – and the Middle East and North Africa in particular – showcasing how parties do indeed matter and play a central role in politics, both good and bad. We will begin by looking at definitions of democracy and how colonialism has shaped elite struggles post-independence, before moving on to former rebel movements in power, and finally arriving at international party assistance, the global climate crisis and women’s representation. Here we shall dwell a little longer while we explore the implications of women’s unequal representation – which is strongly anchored in party politics - for finding inclusive and sustainable solutions to the global climate crisis.

Please note this is an in person event.
