Inaugural professorial lecture:

'Community media: voices from the margins' - Professor Peter Lewis

Decades before the arrival of social media, community media enabled ordinary people to make themselves heard over the airwaves in unprecedented and innovative ways.

In his inaugural lecture, 'Community media: voices from the margins', Professor Peter Lewis will trace his formative contribution to this transformation.

First as practitioner — a programme producer and presenter at national (ITV) and local (Bristol) level. Then as advocate and campaigner for the recognition of community media by government and mainstream media. Finally as an academic: Professor Lewis has played a pivotal international role in establishing radio studies as a discipline.

Co-founder of the Radio Studies Network, he has worked closely with colleagues in mainland Europe in a succession of research projects funded by the Council of Europe, the EU and UNESCO, leading to the formation of ECREA, the European Communication Research and Education Association. In September 2023 he was recognised with an award from ECREA for his “Outstanding Contribution to Radio and Sound Studies”.

Professor Peter Lewis is Professor of Media and Culture in the School of Computing and Digital Media at London Metropolitan University.

This event will take place on our Holloway campus in the Henry Thomas Room (TG-30).
