Description

Our next speaker is Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell DBE FRS FRSE FRAS.

Professor Bell Burnell is currently Visiting Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Mansfield College. She is President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Dublin.

Professor Bell Burnell is best known for discovering pulsars, one of the most significant scientific achievements of the twentieth century. These rapidly-spinning neutron stars are formed in supernova explosions, the phenomena which make life in the universe possible. Professor Bell Burnell has been a high-profile campaigner in efforts to raise the number and profile of women in professional and academic science posts.

Professor Bell Burnell graduated from the University of Glasgow with a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Philosophy in 1965 and obtained a PhD degree from the University of Cambridge in 1969. At Cambridge, Professor Bell Burnell attended New Hall and worked with Hewish and others to construct a radio telescope for using interplanetary scintillation to study quasars.

Professor Bell Burnell will talk about her career, with plenty of opportunity for questions.

The Cambridge Society of Edinburgh will be our guests. Colleagues, friends and family are welcome to attend. Tickets are £10 and include drinks and nibbles. There is a pay at the door option during checkout (as well as card/cheque/bank transfer) but please reserve your space by booking online.

There is an optional meal after the talk at La Piazza Italian restaurant on Shandwick Place (from 8.15pm). Those unable to make the talk may come to the meal only. Attendees pay for their own meal.

Please note that the English-Speaking Union Scotland is in the basement below 22 Atholl Crescent.
