Professor John Lennon, is Vice Dean of the Glasgow School for Business and Society and Director of the Moffat Centre for Travel and Tourism Business Development.

It is theUK’s largest University based tourism consultancy and research centre. It is located in Glasgow Caledonian University and was initially endowed by the Moffat family (AT Mays Travel Agency). The Moffat Centre is responsible for the production of international consumer and market research and business development consultancy and with its profits funds scholarships for students wishing to study Travel and Tourism www.moffatcentre.com). Since 1999 over £1,100,000 worth of scholarships have been awarded to students wishing to study tourism and allied areas at undergraduate and post graduate levels.

John has undertaken over 500 tourism and travel projects in over 35 nations. The Centre has undertaken major projects on behalf of private sector and public sector clients in Norway, Denmark, Malawi, Singapore, Canada, Lithuania, the Caribbean, South Africa, the South Pacific.

John is a Specialist Policy Advisor to the National Tourism Organisation; VisitScotland and a Non-Executive Director of Historic Scotland. John is the author of five books and over 80 articles and numerous reports on the travel and tourism industry

His presentation on dark tourism considers the appeal, interpretation and visitation to sites of death, mass killing, genocide and assassination whether authentic or representational. Since initial academic debate in the late 1990s the term has now received significant attention in main stream media and other communication channels. This presentation will compare key international dark tourism sites in the context of recent research conducted in the area and consider ideological and commercial imperatives in interpretation and operation.
