Description

László Moholy-Nagy - Domesticated Avant-Garde

László Moholy-Nagy was one of the most daring avant-garde artists of the twentieth century. He challenged longstanding divisions between high and low art forms while embracing new technology and partnerships with industry as a part of his practice. Moholy Nagy's range of activities grew out of his commitment to generating modern sensibilities through design, broadly understood. However, in the face of the Great Depression and the threat of war, his work with technology and industry took on a deeply pragmatic cast. Looking at his commercial projects in fashion, advertising, and the film industry in the Germany, the Netherlands and the UK, this talk examines Moholy Nagy's evolving sense of the relationship between patronage and artistic vision. It will conclude with a discussion of the possibility and even desirability of a domesticated avant-garde.
