"Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying." Arthur C. Clarke.

Professor Sarah Rugheimer is an astrobiologist which means she’s searching for signs of life… out there. Join us for a fascinating evening where we’ll discuss the ultimate question, when we look out into the universe, is anyone looking back?

“We are just now finding planets that are Earth-sized and temperate for the first time in history.”

Professor Rugheimer will explain how researchers search for biosignatures, the chemical and atmospheric fingerprints of living processes, and whether we’ve seen any credible hints yet. We’ll also discuss the obstacles facing astrobiologists, from the limits of our instruments to the sheer scale of space itself.

How does one even begin to search for something as elusive as alien life? If we were to detect intelligent life, what’s the game plan? If we could send just one message into space to represent humanity, what should it be?

Cutting-edge science and head-spinning philosophical questions, our evening with Professor Rugheimer will expand our understanding of what it means to be alive - and what it might mean to share the universe with others.

The talk will finish with an audience Q&A and then stick around for drinks and debriefing.
