Event description

Description

As any scientist knows, imagination and creativity are essential to the immense task of science. Science is, after all, the re-creation of a shared model of nature, from the scale of the cosmos, through biological complexity, down to the smallest subatomic structures.

Join Professor Tom McLeish’s as we explore his new book, The Poetry and Music of Science, which takes the reader on a journey through the creative process.

In this talk, Tom will draw on personal accounts of scientists, artists, mathematicians, writers, and musicians from the modern day and from the past, to explore the commonalities and differences in creation, leading us to ask the question ‘how does creativity contribute to what it means to be human?’.

Tom McLeish is the Professor of Natural Philosophy in the Department of Physics at University of York. Tom’s research into soft-matter and biological physics, has explored the role of random processes in protein dynamics, self-assembly of bio-molecular fibres and in evolution itself.

Please either print off your ticket or display it to us on your smartphone or tablet on the evening.
