This free public lecture celebrates the appointment of Wendy Ugolini as Personal Chair of Second World War Studies at the School of History,Classics and Archaeology.
War makes visible the complexities of personal identity construction and identifications. Professor Ugolini’s research, in particular, focuses on the idea of dual identities and dual allegiances, what are sometimes termed hybrid or split identities, within wartime constructions of Britishness. This inaugural lecture will examine the ways in which dual identities can be performed, mobilised, or challenged in wartime British society, addressing Professsor Ugolini’s work on British Italian and English Welsh experience. At the heart of the lecture is the examination of a murder which occurred within the British Army during the Second World War which illuminates the centrality of identity construction to the ways in which British people navigated through a society at war.
The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
