One of Scotland's leading voices on public sector reform will reflect on three decades as an academic at GCU's latest Professorial Lecture.

Professor Geoff Whittam, who is approaching retirement, will discuss the many highlights of his work with national and local government, trade unions, and community groups over the years.

Reflections on 30 Years of an Academic- What is to be Done?, which will take place via Zoom on April 13, is dedicated to Geoff's father, who sadly passed away in December with COVID-19.

Professor Whittam has devoted his career to making academic research relevant accessible to wider society and has been published extensively in the area of entrepreneurship, minority ethnic enterprises, social entrepreneurship, and local economic development.

He has also provided research for Unison, the STUC, the Scottish Left Review, the Jimmy Reid Foundation, Oxfam, Glasgow City Council, and the Scottish Government. A paper exploring the replacement of council tax with a local income tax was promoted by the Scottish Socialist Party and ended up being debated in the Scottish Parliament.

Current research includes collective entrepreneurship, the governance of professional football clubs, the role of social enterprises during COVID, and the need to reform social care.

The lecture will appeal to policymakers, community activists, academics, and anyone with an interest in challenging dominant discourses.
