Description

The World in Deep Transition: Prospects for Transformative Innovation Policy

Speaker: Johan Schot, Professor in the History of Technology and Sustainability Transitions Studies, University of Sussex

The world is facing an unprecedented time of change and transition. Our systems of provision for food, health, mobility and fuel are at a point of crisis. Our current approaches are not adequate to take us through this century to meet the ‘grand challenges’ of our time. How then can we differently address social progress to transform inequalities across, and within, countries? How can we change our systems, rules and behaviour to counter the increasing effects of pollution and climate change? Professor Schot argues that we are in a period of Deep Transition akin only to the First Deep Transition which occurred 200 years ago at the start of the Industrial Revolution. He brings his research programme on Deep Transitions to describe how we may be able to mould a different direction that answers these essential questions. He argues that part of this conundrum is to put science, technology and innovation policy through a new lens of Transformative Innovation Policy to start with fresh assumptions and approaches that are inclusive, radical and ground-breaking.
