Event description
Kids ages 7-12 invent and program cool things. Great for learning how to design and build technology prototypes.

About this Event

(Taught in a combination of Dutch and English.)

During this second and later afternoon bootcamp on Sunday afternoons at the Amsterdam Public Library, kids ages 7-12 will learn important computer science and programming concepts while becoming familiar with collaborative design and computer programming.

Each class will be structured as a mini-hackathon with a surprise topic. NewTechKids' teacher will outline a real-world problem before encouraging kids work in small teams to to come up with ideas for robots and tech prototypes which solve it. Each class will end with team presentations during which kids explain their ideas, prototypes, and learning process.

Kids will dive into design, building and programming using LEGO WeDo, LEGO Mindstorms and art supplies. They'll learn about design concepts (resources, requirements, testing, iteration, best practices) and computer science concepts (algorithms, commands, loops, sequence, iteration, if-else logic, etc.).

Please note: our classes are not competitions. There will be no rankings or prizes and all teams will have the chance to present their work.

Classes will take place on Sundays from 15:30 - 15:30 on the following dates:

- November 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

- December 6, 13

The bootcamp will be taught in a combination of English and Dutch by a native Dutch, professional teacher with specialised training in computer science. The curriculum and workshops are based on NewTechKids’ pedagogy which focuses on concept-context learning and the use of tangible learning tools.

Our camp is ideal for children with no previous exposure to design and computer science and those who have previously participated in NewTechKids programs.

A maximum of 12 students is required to offer this camp. Registrants will be notified one week prior if the program is cancelled and a full refund will be provided.

Location: Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam, Oosterdokskade 143 in the Junior Lab basement (5-minute walk from Centraal Station)

Health Procedures

NewTechKids and the Amsterdam Public Library (OBA) will strictly adhere to the COVID-19 social distancing recommendations issued by the Dutch government and upheld by  the Library and Maakplaats021.

Our bootcamps take place in OBA's Junior Lab, a very large, well-ventilated room.

- NewTechKids is using AI-based software to design our classroom layout and the placement of tables and chairs, location of teacher, etc. Places will be clearly spaced and indicated.

- NewTechKids' teacher will check the temperature of all children with a no-contact thermometer when they arrive and before they enter class. Kids with temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius will be asked to return home.

- Kids will be required to wash their hands when they arrive and there will be multiple hand washing breaks during every class. Hand sanitizer will be readily available.

- Children are encouraged to wear masks but this is optional.

- Our teacher will wear a mask while helping kids working in pairs and teams.
