Event description
Learn how to effectively lead a research project and team through all stages of the project cycle as a postdoc or a new PI.

About this Event

Scriptoria's one-day course in Project Management for Scientific Researchers offers critical capacity building for researchers in leadership roles. This course is aimed at researchers who are leading complex projects and managing collaborations. Whether the team is small or large, project management requires a high degree of organisation and good communication skills. We recommend this course as a foundational overview of formal management theory and tools for all researchers looking to advance their career and manage teams in academia, industry or other sectors.

In this course we cover the programme/project cycle through the stages in detail. We begin by discussing the grant writing process and preparations for work plans, resources, and staff that need to be made during the inception period. Next, we discuss the implementation phase and teach critical management skills for people and resources. Finally, we discuss project monitoring and evaluation as well as project closure, with a focus on knowledge management and legacy. We also give participants key insight into writing Terms of Reference, staff reviews, and other tools for project implementation. This course brings together the most relevant and implementable ideas from business adapted for a research setting.

Using our experience serving as consultants and programme managers on large international programmes, we guide participants through the theory with many real-life examples and exercises to develop practical skills. Scriptoria courses are highly interactive and engaging, combining exercises and discussion with presentations. All participants receive a comprehensive set of course notes to take home.

Venue

A venue in central Birmingham will be announced a minimum of two weeks prior to the course start. Lunch and refreshments (tea, coffee, biscuits) are included in the course price.
