Event description

Description

Welcome to Ovation’s 2019 Spring Festival!

We wanted to bring together creatives, performers, influencers and industry insiders for two-days of events – workshops, scratches, panels, readings, laughs, chats and deep questions – that will bring us together and bring the industry closer to us too.

Note: This festival is for women/womxn and non-binary creatives, as are all Ovation events. Please respect this when buying tickets. Thanks so much.

The supportive team at VAULT Festival have kindly given us space during their festival so we can all come together. And as Ovation is all about bringing people together, we decided that rather than curate the festival ourselves, we would work together with other influencers to bring to you a festival that platforms and appeals to so many voices. So, we are honoured to be working with the following influencers who are curating these stages with us:

- Bechdel Theatre
- COMMON
- ERA 50 50
- Novae Theatre
- The Thelmas
- VanThanh Productions/BEATs
- Young Vic Neighbourhood Theatre

So, what do we have in store for you???

The Festival

The Festival will be on Thursday, March 14th and Friday, March 15th at The VAULTS, Leake Street, London, SE1 7NN.

Each day will run from 10am to 3.30pm (doors open at 9.30am) and, each day, we will be running at least four stages, each packed with events.

The Schedule

Detailed calendar will be coming soon but here’s where we are already!

Thursday March 14th:

- COMMON will be leading a panel discussion with established artists and academics about how 'working-class creatives' have been represented in plays both historically and in contemporary theatre.

- ERA 50:50 is turning expectations on their head with a gender-flipped rehearsed reading of a surprise script!

- Novae Theatre will be introducing us to the world of self-producing, grappling with some of the big questions – how to market, budget and fundraise, develop audiences, the dos and don'ts of pitching to venues and managing workloads. The team want to demystify the term “producing” and aim to leave you inspired and empowered to make those first steps in self-producing your own work.

- Holly Adomah, producer and creator of Getting in Formation, will be curating Scratch Formation, a fantastic room of scratches and new work to entertain and to platform new voices, and she will also be presenting the wonderful Young Vic Neighbourhood Theatre

- Bechdel Theatre will be bringing their theatre-making workshop and we can’t wait.

Friday March 15th:

- Victoria, founder of Ovation and arts writer, will be in conversation with a string of Artistic Directors from across theatre-land. Come and listen as we talk about careers, craft and creativity. Then we will open the floor up to questions from you…

- Audrey, Programming Director at Drayton Arms, will be in conversation with some of the biggest and most exciting names in playwriting (we are SO excited with the line-up) to unpick the balance between skills and experience,

- VanThanh Productions and BEATs will be bringing us THREE workshops – events for writers and actors of colour, and a space for East Asian creatives in theatre to discuss achievements and challenges in the industry.

- The Thelmas will be bringing their much-loved Weapons of Mass Creation (W.M.C.) to the festival. This aims to support women artists of all kinds to develop their voices, and create bold and exciting new theatrical work. The women-only** writers’ group, led by writer, Guleraana Mir and director, Madelaine Moore, group offers writers a safe creative space to explore their writing, receive professional dramaturgy and peer led constructive criticism. For actors, directors and other theatre professionals, it is an opportunity to hear, read and support new work. (** self-identifying women and non-binary)

- Holly will be back with another Scratch Formation session.

The Tickets

We have two-day and one-day tickets available:

Two days: £35. This ticket gives you access on both the Thursday and Friday.

One day: £20. This gives you access on either the Thursday or the Friday – whichever you choose.

All tickets are general admission tickets. All events are free to ticket holders and you can enter and leave any and each of the areas as you please (so long as there are seats available and it won’t disrupt anything going on inside).

Please note: a couple of the events are restricted to certain demographics e.g. creatives of colour, but these will be clearly signposted and there will be plenty of options for all attendees.

There is a fixed attendance capacity for the Festival as we do want to make sure attendees have a quality experience so the two-day tickets, in particular, are strictly limited.

Note: This festival is for women/womxn and non-binary creatives, as are all Ovation events. Please respect this when buying tickets. Thanks so much.
