Project Theia - Female Focused Camp

About Project Theia - Female Focused Camp:

Welcome to Project Theia - Female Focused Camp! Join us for an exciting event tailored for females U21 who are ready to unleash their potential. This performance camp is all about empowering and inspiring young females to achieve their goals within sailing, network with coaches and role models in the world of sailing, and have a great time while doing it!

"If you can't see it, you can't be it" and "There was never really anyone before me that I would have known about or looked to". These are just two examples from our Women and Girls research conducted by Dr Emma Vickers. As part of our new pilot project, “Project Theia” we have introduced the Women on Water Development Programme in response to our Women and Girls research and aligns within our strategic aims of Improving Diversity. *Please note due to our strategic aims and research, the Performance Pathway Camp's first year will be for female sailors only. However next year we will look to do a mixed camp for junior and youth sailors similar to this format*

Research shows that there needs to be more support for women and girls involved in all pathway routes within sailing, from club level racing, right through to performance pathway.

This weekend "Female Focused Camp" is specifically targeted for junior and youth performance pathway girl sailors following the theme of "Performance and being the best me". The weekend will can cover the likes of menstrual cycles in sport, exercise, inspiring people in sailing (coaches/athletes), race training and the Olympic pathway.

The weekend is aimed to..

Showcase performance based training, racing and coaching specifically for junior and youth females (ages U21 - 12yrs)

Inspiring junior and youth females with a person of influence (athlete, ex athlete, coach) showcasing the journey of the Olympic pathway

Female role models across the pathway (this is extremely limited in NI)

Encouragement to train, compete outside their club, try different boats and have the knowledge of “what it takes” to pursue performance pathway.

Weekend will consist of the following classes (Topper, Feva, ILCA, 29er) Opportunity to ask questions and collaborate with people outside the NI Sailing network

Eligibility

  1. All female sailors must be U21 - 12yrs of age to participate and must meet the sailing criteria.
  2. All female sailors must be able to sail strongly on their own (force 4/5), sail a proper course and can right a capsize without assistance. Re - Imagine Pathways - Project Theia

As part of the Northern Ireland RYA Strategy “Navigating the Future” our mission is to support participation across all aspects of our sport. “Project Theia” is the beginning of a Pilot Project developed by the Pathways Officer, the project aims to shine upon Pathway routes and opportunities within the world of sailing. With “Re-Imagined Pathways” embedded in our strategy, Project Theia aims to inspire and develop sailors across Northern Ireland. The Project name “Theia” is based on the Goddess of Sight & Vision in Greek mythology. We want people who are involved in all aspects of our sport, to see the pathways that sailing can offer them and embrace the opportunities that sailing provides. Project Theia encourages additional opportunities for sailors across Northern Ireland, making pathways more accessible across our sport.
