- A whole host of new challenges to tackle and impress thought leaders in project delivery who will be judging your solutions
For more specific information, visit our Project:Hack page https://www.projectdataanalytics.co.uk/projecthack/
- When signing up to Project:Hack 13, please use the email that you want to be used to access the teams group e.g. work email
Project:Hack 13 Aims:
Explore methods and tools to transform how insights and value can be extracted from project data. Ranging from risk and schedule data through to on site presence of personnel.
Project:Hack 13 enables delivery professionals to understand the predisposition of projects to specific challenges, to predict them arising and take action to avoid the avoidable.
Ignite the professional imagination on what can be achieved and shape the future of project delivery.
Project:Hack 13 Challenges
Challenge 1 - Social Media Analytics Strategy
This challenge asks you to tackle social media data. NHS Project Futures is looking for data lead insight into their social media presence and how we leverage social media data. Due to its nature, social media data requires a lot of human insight into how it is understood and taken advantage of this means you will need to think very carefully about your proposals.
Challenge 2 - Managing Performance Indicators for Sub-Contractors
"This challenge is about creating an application to manage contractors Health and Safety Performance Indicators. The goal is to allow and encourage contractors to achieve the highest health and safety standard they can. With more clear data analysis and insight we can start projecting the success and failure of initiatives and help to ensure that everyone remains at the highest standard possible.
Challenge 3 - Gamification at Work
"This challenge is about Gamification in the workplace. We want to explore the idea of creating video game style profiles for employees to showcase achievements and encourage self-improvements. We also want to explore how this concept can be used to help create a positive, supporting and encouraging environment in the workplace.
Challenge 4 - Generating Dynamic Feedback
Nowadays, it’s nearly impossible to get ahead in business without customer feedback.
Tetra Tech's current client feedback system is an automated email sent out after projects are complete. While this produces some actionable information, it does not allow for the most effective process possible because there's no way to get a true sense of what clients think in real time.
The aim for this challenge is to make customer-feedback as dynamic as possible by developing an intuitive and clear feedback system (utilising numeric assessment criteria), accessed through a link.
This will help them improve performance for future projects while also increasing customer satisfaction rates for the organization.
Challenge 5 - Visualising Risk Geographically
"This challenge explores how we interpret risk and how it applies geographically. This challenge has the potential to lay a great foundation for building risk assessments on data and insight.
Challenge 6 - Machine Learning for Customer Correspondence
National Highways want to be able to predict when they are not going to meet customer correspondence deadlines. This challenge is a great opportunity for Hack participants to gain experience in Machine learning. The data provided is simple and pre-prepared for machine learning and can be tackled with simple models. More experienced participants can use this challenge as an opportunity to trial and showcase different machine learning models and display the benefits of all.
Challenge 7 - Enabling AI Report Generation
"Once again, we are tackling an industry problem with the power of OpenAI’s GPT-3. This challenge is to test the waters of how much we can rely on Natural Language Generation to automate important project reports.
Skills:
• GPT-3
• Automation
• Understand project relevant data"
Challenge 8 - Design Performance Indexing and Root Cause Analysis
"The design management processes creates masses of data through various sources such as the Common Data Environment, BIM collaboration software and RFI applications. There is huge potential for leveraging this data to uncover patterns and relationships, for benchmark and performance indexing and to understand factors that may indicate a design is not developing to plan.
This challenge is to develop new insights into the data that is already produced through the design management process, to help to better-understand performance in this area. As a starting point the solutions that are developed should look to address the following questions and start to develop KPIs:•
• Does a large amount of RFIs, drawing revisions and/or BIM clashes suggest that the design has not been well thought-out or properly coordinated?
• Does the timing of construction issue drawings and revisions have negative effect on project performance?
• A poor design can cause significant issues for a project which are often difficult to recover from–having established a set of KPIs, does the performance against these KPIs correspond to poor overall project performance?(as defined with the “Project Performance” metric).
• The nature of the contract and the project sector will dictate the level of design responsibility that the project team has, as well as the complexity of the design–is this reflected in the data?
We would like to make maximum use of this data to understand:
• Performance of our consultant and sub-contractor design teams real time and historically.
• The effect of contract type on design performance
• The effect of design team performance on overall project performance
• Whether design development on a project is dipping below these indexes so that timely interventions can be made
For this challenge project performance takes the form of a 1-5 score, based on it’s on time, on cost and to required quality."

Let’s get started!
We'll start Project:Hack13 by introducing the challenges and the data sets. You'll then have the opportunity to pitch your idea to the crowd to invite team members, or join a team whose idea you want to work on. The remainder of the weekend will be spent developing the concepts, interrogating the data, building proof of concepts and delivering a solid pitch to support it. Finally, you'll get the opportunity to present to industry experts who will judge your proposal.
Happy to support you!
At Project:Hack 13 there will be tons of support. Data scientists, PowerBI experts and subject matter experts will help you with technical queries and mentors will guide you towards the perfect pitch. Computer science students are also welcome. It promises to be a great couple of days with food, drinks, ideas and bucket loads of fun.
The only requirement is to come with a lot of bright ideas and enthusiasm! Oh and your laptop
Fees
We had over 200 register to the last Project:Hack event. In order to ensure that people only book who intend to come to the event, we will be charging a fee. All ticket proceeds, less VAT and platform fees, will be donated to Cancer Research. Please note that platform fees are non-refundable (Eventbrite policy).
Sponsors
Big thank you to our sponsors so far Environment Agency, nPlan, Nodes & Links, CodeNode Space & Events & Projecting Success for supporting the event!
We are seeking sponsors for Project:Hack 13. Please get in touch if you are interested in supporting it.
