About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

This Promise Online Session on Tuesday 23rd September will share the learning story of Camden Council and their Family Advisory Board.

Join us to hear how the London Borough of Camden have established an early help and community approach which embeds co-production with families at its heart. Their children's services have recieved two outstanding inspection reports from Ofsted, with their learning transferable to Scotland.

Achievements from their 11 year journey include the establishment of the Family Advisory Board, a citizen-led board in which all members have lived experience of children’s services or Family Group Conferences in Camden. The Board supports the council to shape their practice and services. They have developed a peer advocacy service for parents who are going through child protection processes.

A review found that Camden’s investment in early help and family support was the third highest per head of population in the country in 2020-21, and its focus on this area had helped half referral rates to children’s social care, and the number of children in need by 30%, from 2014-21.

Ofsted found that a “clear and concerted focus on helping families identify solutions for themselves ensures that statutory services are not involved in their lives for any longer than is necessary”

Following the input, you’ll take part in small breakout discussions to reflect on what you’ve heard, and consider how it connects to your own practice.

What you’ll take away from this session:

  • How partners worked together to change the culture around early help, ensuring co-production with those experiencing the services.
  • An understanding of some of the challenges faced by the project
  • Practical ways to apply approaches in your own context
  • Shared learning and inspiration from peers across sectors

Promise Online Sessions are an opportunity to hear about good practice, share key learning and connect to address challenges and barriers.
