Description

Promoting and Maintaining Positive Parental Engagement

This course is suitable for professionals working in any primary or secondary school, particularly those where parental engagement can sometimes be an issue. We look at why excellent parental engagement is a necessity, and how it can be adopted to encourage successful home /school working. We also look at the beneficial impact this work has on the attendance, behaviour and aspiration of children. Dynamic exercises throughout the training help you to formulate a robust engagement action plan specific to the needs and priorities of your individual school.

Day 1 – Thursday 1st December 2016

An introduction to Positive Parental Engagement

The course begins by looking at the positive benefits of good engagement with parents and how this can affect not just the individual child but the whole school. The session is underpinned throughout by the studies of Professor Charles Desforges, one of the world’s leading experts in the area of parental engagement.

We will spend time looking at the term “Hard to Reach” and unpick our own attitudes and expectations. We will then examine the reasons why parents can be reluctant to engage and look at differing attitudes and views of education. We will also take some time identifying how we ourselves might be hard to reach in the eyes of some parents.

Day 2 – Thursday 8th December 2016

Engagement in action, identifying targets and getting ready

We will look at real-life case studies involving positive engagement. This will demonstrate the value and power of a “whole school” attitude to excellent engagement.

We will begin to look at what we wish to achieve with this work, and the importance of identifying and prioritising desired outcomes. A variety of practical engagement techniques will be examined suitable for both individual parents and larger groups. Throughout the session we will identify possible pitfalls in order to optimise our chances of success.

Day 3 – Thursday 15th December 2016

Action planning

We will begin to work on our individual engagement action plans. If the training is being aimed at staff within a single school this will form a collective plan where roles and responsibilities are agreed. Where the class comprises staff from multiple schools, individual plans will be written specifically for those schools. The module will involve small-group work underpinned with support from the trainer throughout the session.

Day 4 – Thursday 26th January 2017

Completion of action plans and maintaining/building upon excellent engagement work in the future.

The action plans begun in the last session will be completed. Group members will be given the opportunity to finalise and feed back their plans to their colleagues. Constructive suggestions and ideas will be offered by the trainer ensuring that a strong plan is ready to be implemented following completion of the course.

Throughout the programme we will have looked at the idea of “sustainable engagement” and this final session will pay particular attention to how good parental engagement can be maintained, built upon, and enhanced in the future.
