Event description

Description

Thomas Cromwell is one of the most famous—or notorious—figures in English history. Interest has been recently renewed in him by Hilary Mantel's fictional Wolf Hall trilogy. But who was the real man behind the legend? Cromwell rose from obscurity to become Henry VIII's chief minister where he helped the king divorce with Rome, dissolve the monasteries, make (and then) break Anne Boleyn. Diarmaid MacCulloch, one of our greatest historians, produces the definitive life of an elusive personality who has been regarded, over time, as a Protestant martyr, the first bureaucrat and a Stalinist enforcer. MacCulloch's biography for the first time reveals Cromwell's true place in the making of modern England and Ireland, for good and ill. "This is the biography we have been awaiting for 400 years" says Mantel.

Thomas Comwell: A Life will soon be available to buy online. There is no requirement to read the book prior to the event, these events are to encourage debate and generate new ideas.

Editor's Club Members receive free entry.
