Prospects for Economic Reform in Europe: what role for Britain?
Speakers:
Andy Bagnall, CBI
Prof Ali El-Agraa, Fukuoka University
John Peet, The Economist
Mujtaba Rahman, Eurasia Group
Wednesday 17 June 2015, 19.30-21.00
Venue: LSE Wolfson Theatre, New Academic Building 54 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3LJ This event is free and open to all. Admission is on a first come, first served basis.
Structural reform of the EU's sclerotic economies is at the top of national policy agendas but the political and electoral obstacles are formidable. Is the flexible, liberal approach to economics long championed by Britain the key to boosting the EU's competitiveness and its economic performance? How can Britain improve the effectiveness of its economic advocacy in the EU? A panel of economics experts will explore the options.
Andy Bagnall leads the CBI’s Campaign Directorate. Andy joined the CBI in 2011 having previously held a number of policy and campaigning jobs. He has a background in election organisation at both local and national levels. He was a special adviser to the UK government, serving two cabinet ministers in three departments over four years. Immediately before joining the CBI, Andy advised on state elections in Sydney, Australia.
Ali M. El-Agraa is Emeritus Professor of International Economic Integration at Fukuoka University, Japan. During his career Ali has acted as General Consultant for the Anglo-Japanese Economic Institute, Senior International Consultant for the United Nations and Member of the Committee of the International Economics Study Group, sponsored by the UK Economic and Social Research Council. He has held visiting professorships across the world, in the UK, China, US, Japan and Thailand.
John Peet has been Europe Editor at The Economist since September 2003, responsible for coverage of the European Union, Russia, Turkey, the Caucasus and the Balkans. Earlier positions at The Economist, which he joined in 1986, have included Britain correspondent, Washington, DC, correspondent, Executive Editor, Brussels (EU) correspondent and Executive Editor. His surveys and special reports have included Management Consulting, Health Care, Financial Centres, the American South, Global Finance, E-commerce, Water, Spain, the European Union, European Monetary Union, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, the Future of Europe, Turkey and, most recently, France.
Mujtaba Rahman is Practice Head for Europe at Eurasia Group. He focuses on European political economy. In addition, Mujtaba has primary responsibility for all aspects of EU/eurozone coverage, as well as leading country coverage on Greece, Cyprus, and the UK.
Prior to joining Eurasia Group, Mujtaba worked at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs, and at the UK Treasury. He is an adjunct professor at New York University's Stern Business School and teaches political risk to graduate students at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. In addition, Mujtaba regularly appears in the media, providing commentary on European affairs for publications including the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times and television appearances on the BBC, Bloomberg, and CNBC.
The LSE European Institute (@LSEEI) was established in 1991 as a dedicated centre for the interdisciplinary study of processes of integration and fragmentation within Europe.
