Event description

Description

The publication of Prosperity without Growth was a landmark in the sustainability debate. Tim Jackson’s piercing challenge to conventional economics openly questioned the most highly-prized goal of politicians and economists alike: the continued pursuit of exponential economic growth. Its findings provoked controversy, inspired debate and led to a new wave of research building on its arguments and conclusions. Seven years after it was first published, on the occasion of substantially revised and updated second edition, Tim Jackson discusses how much has changed (and remained unchanged) in the interim and argues that building a ‘post-growth’ economy is now a precise definable and meaningful task.

The Seminar is part of the ECI Big Ideas Seminar series and will be followed by a drinks reception for an opportunity to mingle, chat and network.

Hosted by Professor Jim Hall, Director of the Environmental Change Institute

About Tim:

Tim Jackson is Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Surrey and Director of the newly-awarded Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP). Tim currently also holds an ESRC Professorial Fellowship on Prosperity and Sustainability in the Green Economy (PASSAGE). He has been at the forefront of academic work on sustainability for over two decades and has undertaken numerous advisory roles on the social and economic dimensions of sustainability for business, government, civil society and inter-governmental agencies. Between 2004 and 2011, he was Economics Commissioner on the UK Sustainable Development Commission, where his work culminated in the publication of Prosperity without Growth (Routledge 2009/2017), which received widespread acclaim and was subsequently translated into 17 foreign languages.
