Event description

Description

Sponsored by HFS Milbourne

Many clients are concerned about the loss of assets if they have to go into a care home. The Conservatives came up with a proposal before the last election which was not well received. This course will examine any new proposals or changes in the law, and what advice should be given to clients; if there have not been any changes announced, it will consider the existing law. It will also consider how likely a client will have to go into a care home, and whether asset protection trusts are effective.

The course will consider:-

  • Any new proposals or changes in the law about care home fees;
  • The percentage of the population living in care homes;
  • What capital will be disregarded;
  • Remedies open to local authorities;
  • The advice to be given to clients;
  • Are asset protection trusts effective?

This seminar is aimed at achieving Competency Statement B – Technical Legal Practice: To give an increased knowledge of the subject matter; to update on current issues, case law and statutory provisions and to be able to apply the knowledge gained in the better provision of a service to the client.

Speaker: John Thurston, LL.B., TEP, solicitor. He is particularly interested in private client law. He is the author of “A Practitioner’s Guide to Powers of Attorney”, “A Practitioner’s Guide to Trusts”, “A Practitioner’s Guide to Inheritance Claims” , “A Practitioner’s Guide to Executorship and Administration” and “Estate Planning for the Middle Income Client” all published by Bloomsbury Professional. He is also a contributor to “Tolley’s Administration of Trusts” and “Tolley’s Administration of Estates”.

Please note that this seminar will be held in the Ranmore Suite on the Ground Floor at Denbies Wine Estate, Dorking. Registration is from 1.30pm with tea and coffee. The session will commence at 2.00pm and finish at 5.15pm with a 15 minute break at about 3.30pm for tea.
