Working closely with trauma, distress and human suffering can leave a lasting psychological impact – even when it’s not your own experience. This workshop, for GPs, NHS staff and mental health professionals, offers a compassionate, evidence-informed space to understand secondary (vicarious) trauma and its effects on wellbeing, clinical judgement and professional performance.
Participants will explore how secondary trauma shows up cognitively, emotionally, and physically; how it differs from burnout; and why it is a normal response to caring work – not a personal weakness. The session focuses on practical, trauma-informed strategies, including setting boundaries, using micro-buffers during the day, reflective practice, and safe debriefing. Supportive and non-pathologising, this workshop helps clinicians remain effective, regulated, and connected.
Workshop Highlights:
- Understand what secondary trauma is and how it differs from burnout
- Recognise cognitive, emotional, and physical signs in yourself and colleagues
- Learn practical, trauma-informed strategies to protect yourself
- Explore boundaries, reflective practices, and safe debriefing to sustain professional performance
