Event description

Description

The Protestation Returns of 1642 are the closest record we have to a seventeenth century census. The Returns were created in response to an order of the House of Commons, in which all adult men were asked to swear an oath of allegiance to the Protestant religion. Their names were duly inscribed in a list for each parish- now the Returns are a valuable resource for family and local history research.

Penny McMahon, Parliamentary Archivist, is leading a workshop at the Dorset History Centre which will demonstrate how to use the Parliamentary Archives' Map Search to help you track down your ancestors or discover more about life in your area in 1640's.

Some laptops will be available to use, but feel free to bring your own device and connect to our wi-fi.
