Event description
Prototyping the food commons for algorithmic food justice

About this Event

You are invited to take part in the final workshop for the Algorithmic Food Justice project, exploring algorithmic prototypes for the food commons and more-than-human values.

The aim of this workshop is to prototype new ways of implementing a food commons for thriving multispecies communities using algorithms and smart contracts, drawing on scenarios, visions, and ideas that were generated in the first two workshops in the series.

The first two workshops generated different ways of thinking about our relationship with other species, resources and infrastructures within the food system. We will work with these alternative visions to explore how we might design new systems of value exchange with the help of software code to recognise the different needs, contributions and value flows of diverse multispecies communities. You do not need to have been at the previous workshops to attend this one.

From 10:00 - 12:30 we are inviting people with technical expertise (e.g. coding, blockchain, prototyping and alternative currencies) to explore different strategies for prototyping smart contracts and blockchain facets. The prototypes will aim to address Nobel Prize-winning economist Elinor Ostrom’s Design Principles for the Commons, around membership, payments, rules, rewards, sanctions and monitoring.

Zimbabwean lunch will be served at 12:30-13:30.

From 12:30-16:00 we welcome a wider group of participants including growers, artists, and community organisers to role-play the different blockchain-based prototypes that we develop in the morning session.

We are able to reimburse you £40 for your particpation for the day. Lunch is included.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you are able to join as places are limited.

In the new year we will produce a publication based on the workshop series, and organise an event to present findings of the project to the wider public.

We hope you can join us.
