Event description
Building on the highly successful Proust Phenomenon experiments, the event maps the specific smells that belong to Transylvania.

About this Event

Based on research into the so-called Proust Phenomenon, which suggests that odours can reactivate childhood memories, participants are invited to take part in an interactive psychological experiment that collects Transylvanian smells and tastes that trigger early memories. Building on the Being Human Festival’s highly successful Snidge Scrumpin’ events, the experiment maps the specific smells that belong to Transylvania, from țuică (plum brandy) to various cheeses, cârnați afumați (smoked sausages) and hencleș (traditional German cake). The public will be exposed to a number of different Transylvanian smells, and be asked to retrieve and describe memories, and then rate these on various dimensions. The event also includes a talk about the role of smell in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the novel that made Transylvania famous. As Sibiu is Gastronomic Region of Europe in 2019, Proust in Transylvania will be one of several international events, including a conference titled “Craving Planet Earth”. This event is part of the Being Human festival, the UK’s only national festival of the humanities, taking place 14–23 November. For further information please see beinghumanfestival.org
