Event description

The Provision of Reasonable Adjustments for Disabled People by Hospital Services: Getting Things Changed.

A workshop for health professionals working with hospital settings.

Overview of the day

This is our second reasonable adjustment workshop in Leeds which aims to address the provision of reasonable adjustments for disabled people by hospital services.

While this workshop will build on our previous session in April 2017, any health professional working within a hospital setting is welcome to attend this event.

This workshop will aim to

  • Help delegates understand their responsibilities, and that of their hospital, in providing reasonably adjusted services for disabled people.

  • Hold a reasonable adjustment ‘marketplace’ to share examples of good practice from around the country about how individual hospitals provide reasonably adjusted care for their disabled patients.

  • Identify hospital strategies that allow for reasonable adjustments to be provided for disabled people.

  • Discuss how positive changes to how reasonable adjustments are provided to disabled people can be transferred and embedded across hospitals.

As indicated above, during this workshop, we will be holding a ‘reasonable adjustments marketplace’. For this marketplace, we plan on hospital representatives sharing their examples of good practice about how they provide reasonable adjustments to their services for disabled people.

As part of this marketplace, we will also discuss how provisions of reasonable adjustments can be enhanced to better help disabled people, including possible strategies that could be used, what challenges may be encountered, and how these difficulties can be addressed.

On registering for this workshop, you will have the opportunity to indicate whether you would like to share any examples of good practice for the reasonable adjustment marketplace. If you feel you would like to be included, a member of the research team will then contact you with more information.

We are committed to ensuring that any necessary reasonable adjustments are provided for disabled participants.

The event will be held in a level-access building, with automatic doors.

The building is fitted with a hearing loop system.

Information provided to delegates will be available in large print.

Free parking, including disabled parking spaces, will be available.

On registering for this event, you will be given the opportunity to note any other reasonable adjustments you would like us to provide. A member of the research team will then contact you to discuss these needs further, if required.

Teas, coffees, and lunch will be provided for this event. On registering, you will be given the opportunity to note any dietary requirements.

The workshop is free attend, however places are limited. If you are interested in attending, please register to confirm your place as soon as possible.

The registration period will end on Friday 29th September.

Further information

The UK Equality Act (2010) requires all organisations to make changes or ‘reasonable adjustments’ to their services to ensure that disabled people are not unfairly disadvantaged. This requirement to provide reasonable adjustments includes hospitals and other providers of health and social care. Examples of reasonable adjustments may include: improving physical access to hospital buildings; providing information in accessible formats; or changing the timing, length or location of patient appointments.

The ‘Getting Things Changed: Tackling Disabling Practices’ programme is investigating the barriers that disabled people experience in a number of different contexts, in order to highlight, and subsequently fill, potential gaps that develop between policies (such as the UK Equality Act, 2010), and practices (such as providing reasonable adjustments).
