Description

On 27 July, to celebrate SBS’ 40th anniversary, our next event will be an open air showing of the movie “Provoked” outside Lidl, High Street, Southall. It tells the real life story of Kiranjit Ahluwalia, perhaps our most prominent case and campaign.

In May 1989, after suffering violence and abuse for 10 years, Kiranjit Ahluwalia, an Indian woman of Asian (Punjabi) origin, killed her abusive husband by setting fire to him. She was charged with his murder and imprisoned for life. SBS took her case to the Court of Appeal and campaigned for her release because we strongly felt that her conviction was a miscarriage of justice. At her trial, the court did not examine why she was driven to kill her husband.

In July 1992, Kiranjit won her appeal against her conviction on the grounds of diminished responsibility and in the process underlined the discriminatory nature of the criminal law, especially the law of provocation. Her case highlighted how the law was based on male standards of behaviour and did not allow for the examination of the abusive, coercive, controlling and constraining context in which abused women kill. The case was also ground breaking for another reason: it shone a spotlight on domestic violence in South Asian communities and helped to create awareness of how the patriarchal concepts of ‘honour’ and ‘shame’ silence South Asian women.

This was a ground-breaking victory for SBS and has come to symbolise our organisation and our work. To mark this historic case, we are showing the movie in the heart of Southall. We want to continue to challenge the cultural and religious values that demand silence from women. We want all women, regardless of their background, to know that they’re not alone and to speak out and seek help in the face of domestic violence and other forms of harm.

We are thrilled that Kiranjit Ahluwalia will be attending (at the film show) to introduce the film and to address the audience.

We are also grateful to the leader of Ealing Council, Julian Bell for supporting this event and for agreeing to say a few words along with Meena Patel one of the main members/founders of SBS.

Non-alcoholic drinks and refreshments/crisps will be available.

Don’t miss this wonderful occasion.
