Event description

Description

After a long hiatus of research into psychedelic compounds, the last twenty years have seen a resurgence of interest into their potential therapeutic properties, given their unique effect on consciousness and the brain. Recent trials have investigated their use for conditions such as depression, addictions, OCD, and end-of-life anxiety. While the studies are small and the results preliminary, they are very promising and have paved the way for larger worldwide trials investigating these tools more closely. Newcastle is one of a few UK sites taking part in this worldwide movement.

Dr Mourad Wahba is a Research Fellow in Psychiatry at Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Trust (NTW), with previous experience of working within the Newcastle addictions service and specialised regional mood disorder services. He is currently the sub-investigator for the Psilocybin in Treatment-Resistant Depression study (P- TRD) in Newcastle.

His experience in addictions and mood disorders and passion for utilising psychedelic drugs therapeutically brings him to Newcastle University to talk about; the potential benefits of these drugs, their potential risks, and what measures can be taken to minimise harm if used non-clinically.

We endeavour to put on these public events for free, and in order to sustain this, we need to ask for donations to the society from those who can afford it. As little as £1 each can really help us to get more interesting speakers for you. You can either donate in cash on the night or via our NUSU page https://www.nusu.co.uk/organisation/13372/ non-students will need to register as a guest user. We also encourage you to make recommendations for any speakers you would like us to get in, or let us know of any particular area of interest you would like spoken about.
