Using tailored psychological techniques delivered on a DVD for stroke survivors with aphasia

Aims:We examined the feasibility of using a set of psychological techniques for reducing stress and anxiety, with stroke survivors with different levels of aphasia.

Method: A mixed-methods case series study was conducted with 9 survivors, who had mild to medium level of aphasia measured by Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test (FAST). After completing baseline (T1) measures on post-stroke functional ability and level of anxiety, theywere given a copy of the DVD to practice once a day for 4 weeks at home. They then came back to complete follow-up measures and participated in focus group discussions to discuss their feedback on using these techniques.

Results and Discussions: Participants found it easy to use these techniques at home. However, there is a mixed result regarding whether they found the techniques useful. Factors influencing survivors’ perceived usefulness include length of having a stroke and physical pain after stroke, but not level of aphasia. The evidence indicated that these techniques were feasible but may be most useful to be introduced at an earlier stage of stroke.
