About this event

About this Event

What does the programme cover?

Are you interested in how children and young people learn? In the mental and emotional well-being of children and young people? Perhaps you already work, or would like to work, with children and young people and want to enhance your academic knowledge and professional practice.

Covering a different topic every week, this programme will take you through some of the areas of psychology for education that are taught on the undergraduate programme 'BA Psychology for Education' at Birkbeck, University of London.

Who can take part?

This free online 5 week programme delivered by Senior Lecturer, Ana da Cunha Lewin, from the Department of Psychological Sciences, is for those with an interest in psychology, education and children and young people, who would like to study the subject at university regardless of their previous education experience. It is open to anyone with no previous experience of university, and is designed for those who have had a break from education.

The course consists of 4 recorded webinars and 5 live online discussions which take place weekly so please ensure you are able to take part in the whole programme if you're signing up as places are limited.

You do not need any particular qualifications or experience to take part, but a curious mind and an interest in psychology and how children learn would be an advantage!

The programme covers the following:

Week 1: Supporting children to engage with their learning

Monday 8th March, 6-7:30pm

In this first session, we will discuss the key factors that promote (or sometimes hinder) children and young people engaging in their studies. We will also explore strategies that we can use both with our own children and with children that we work with.

Week 2: How children learn

Monday 15th March, 6-7:30pm

During the 2nd session, we will discuss an overview of how children learn, the key factors that promote and hinder learning and explore some strategies that we can use to make children's learning more effective and more fun.

Week 3: Supporting children's wellbeing - Resilience and emotional control

Monday 22nd March, 6-7:30pm

In this session, we explore what psychological research has told us about resilience and emotional control. We will also explore how we can nurture these helpful skills in both our own children or children that we work with.

Week 4: Relationships, communication and education

Monday 29th March, 6-7:30pm

In week 4, we discuss how relationships, attitudes and communication can support (and sometimes hinder) children's and young people's educational engagement and attainment. We will also explore some simple behavioural and communication strategies that will help us to support children more effectively.

Week 5: Continuing your learning

Monday 12th April, 6-7:30pm

The last live online discussion will give you the opportunity to reflect on what you have learnt during the course, explore your future study options and finish with some ideas for next steps and how to take your learning journey to the next level!

How do I take part in this programme?

  • Booking a place confirms that you are able to attend all 5 sessions.
  • Places are limited to those who do not have previous experience of university in the UK.
  • Each week, we'll send you the webinar to watch in your own time.
  • The online discussion groups will take place live on the dates and times listed above, and you'll need to log in using the link we send you with the webinar video. There is no need to register for the software, it will just ask you for your name.

The online discussion will be a chance to speak to others, talk about your own ideas and opinions based on what you have watched and heard during the webinars and ask any questions about the content.

What if I'm not confident with digital technology or don't have a computer?

We understand that it can be daunting to learn online especially if it's something you haven't done before. You might also have worries about how it fits in with other commitments or whether you have the right technology to take part.

All the content we share including the live sessions are accessible via smart phone.

We also offer additional support including the chance to be linked up with a digital mentor who can walk you through how to take part in the live session. Please tell us about any worries you have about accessing course content when you fill out the sign up form.

Please log on 10-15 minutes before each weekly session to make sure there are no technical issues with your connection. We will also arrange an opportunity for you to practise using the software before the programme starts, for those who would like that additional assistance.
