Being Happy: Perspectives from Clinical Psychology

It is a natural instinct of all human to pursue happiness. But what is happiness?

“There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so.” (Hamlet, William Shakespeare).

In this talk we will explore the meaning of happiness and its types. We will discuss if and why it is important to be happy from the perspective of clinical psychology. We will end the masterclass with research findings on strategies of becoming happy. If you are interested in happiness and want to know if there are any formulas of being happy – join us for this masterclass.

Neuroscience of Crime: The Brain of a Psychopath

Psychopaths tend to catch the public eye. They are associated with murder or, at the very least, with manipulating the incautious without any sense of guilt or remorse. But what about the psychopaths who discreetly live among us, unobtrusively and without raising suspicion? Are they all dormant serial killers just waiting for the right moment to strike, or can they contribute positively to society?

Approximately 1% of any given population (or a little more than 600.000 people in the UK alone) show clear psychopathic tendencies. Unsurprisingly, these people constitute a large percentage of the prison population. But they are not just serial killers and other criminals. They are also well-represented among our political and military leadership, CEO’s of major corporations and leaders on Wall Street, not to mention well known figures in the arts.

Join us, at the University of Chichester for this Masterclass, where we explore this interesting yet underexplored topic.

Being a PAL

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) is a student-to-student support scheme aimed to support students with their transition to University and contribute to the wider student experience.

PAL is a globally recognised scheme where students in the same subject work with each other, and in partnership with a supportive academic. Well-trained student PAL leaders run weekly academic study sessions in specific modules. You work with students from the years above who have been through the module, which is known to be tough or difficult, and together you gain a better understanding. Recent data shows that students who go to PAL sessions regularly gain better results.

At the University of Chichester, our peer-leaders are called Voluntary Teaching Assistants (VTAs). Our VTAs are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year Psychology students, so they have recently been through the transition and taken the same modules as they are supporting. The VTAs have the opportunity to not only refresh their subject knowledge, but also develop employability skills, such as leadership, facilitation, project management, and interpersonal skills, alongside gaining excellent teaching experience.

Once you have registered you will receive a confirmation email with more details and how to join !
