This is the sequel to the popular lectureFundamentals of Psychedelics, performed by Voytek Bereza. This lecture delves into the emerging science of psychonautics—the study of how Pivotal Mental States (PIMs), such as those induced by psychedelics, can be harnessed for self-discovery and biohacking.
Following the Australian Government's July 2023 decision to reclassify psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and MDMA (ecstasy) as prescription medicines, there has been growing interest in their therapeutic potential. The lecture examines how Pivotal Mental States (PIMS) — whether triggered by substances like psilocybin or MDMA, or through experiences such as near-death encounters — can temporarily dissolve the rigid cognitive patterns that typically constrain our self-perception.
During these altered states, several key psychological mechanisms enable profound self-examination. The temporary suspension of ordinary cognitive filters allows previously suppressed memories, emotions, and insights to emerge more freely. Individuals often report experiencing a fundamental shift in perspective, observing their thoughts and behaviors as if from an external vantage point rather than through their usual subjective lens. This altered viewpoint can illuminate unconscious patterns, motivations, and deeply held beliefs that normally remain beyond conscious awareness, creating opportunities for meaningful psychological insight and potential therapeutic breakthrough.
The session will run for 30 minutes, followed by an interactive forum where attendees can ask questions and engage in open discussion. The session will end with an optional demonstration of a stroboscopic system which induces closed eyed hallucinations.
