Event description
Are you curious about astronomy and interested in hearing more? Wondered what it would be like to look at the stars with a telescope?

About this Event

The Astrophysics Group will be holding our monthly astronomy evening On Wednesday 16th October. The evening will begin with an exciting cutting edge research lecture. Weather permitting, this will be followed by going to our telescope on campus. Or if the weather is not so good we will give you a tour of what you can see in the night sky on clearer nights. Members of our Astrophysics group will also be on hand during the evening to answer your questions.

Title: Are we alone?

Abstract:

For thousands of years humans have been contemplating the night sky and wondering whether we are unique or whether are there other worlds like our own Earth. The search for other civilisations is not restricted to sci-fi books or movies. On the contrary, it has massively taken off with the new generation of space telescopes.

In this talk, I will take you on a journey from the first discovery of worlds beyond our own, to the latest data on the weird and wonderful zoo of "exoplanets" around alien stars. In the end, we will go full circle to ask afresh: "are we alone?"
