The lecture synopsis and speaker biography are as follows:
Synopsis
Since the end of the Great Recession in 2008/09, the UK economy has only generated relatively small amounts of growth (<1% per annum). Such levels of growth are seen as insufficient to materially improve (or even maintain) living standards and/or to finance growth in the demand for public services.
Governments of all political parties (including the present government) sees increased economic growth as a key aspiration, but little improvement seems to be forthcoming. There are a number of reasons why this might be the case, and, in this lecture, Professor Prowle will explore the following themes:
- What is meant by economic growth?
- Why is economic growth needed?
- The impact of climate change and related issues
- The need for sustainable economic growth
- Delivering sustainable economic growth
- The key role for small-medium businesses
- What other paths might be followed?
