PUBLIC LECTURE

 The New Astronomy of Gravitational Waves

The organisers of the 73rd Scottish Universities Summer Schools in

Physics are pleased to announce a public lecture by

DR JOAN M CENTRELLA

Director, Astrophysics Science Division

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center

Dr. Joan Centrella is an astrophysicist whose research has taken her across the cosmos in space and time, building numerical laboratories and leading teams to probe the depths of extreme gravity and the early history of the universe. More information can be found here - NASA

The discovery of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) has opened up a new window onto the universe. Gravitational waves bring news about the cosmos that we cannot obtain in any other way, and thereby allow us to explore the universe in new and exciting ways. In this talk, we will take a look at the recent discoveries, see how they are already changing what we know about the universe, and explore future oervations to be made by space-borne detectors such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).

WHERE: University of St Andrews. School of Physics & Astronomy, Main Lecture Theatre.

WHEN: Wednesday 2nd of August, 6pm to 7pm.

WHO: Open to all

REGISTER: This is a free event but registration is required.

We look forward to seeing you there!

The themes to be covered during the School are:

  • General Relativity and gravitational waves;
  • Astrophysical sources;
  • Gravitational wave detection (ground and space based);
  • Data analysis;
  • Multi-messenger astrophysics
