Event description

Description

With so much talk about major local developments like York Central and Castle Gateway, and the Local Plan earmarking sites across the city for new housing, now is a great time to think about how we connect ourselves to the grid and how we might do it better.

We’re teaming up with Yorspace, the community co-housing group planning to build a new low-impact development at Lowfield Green, to look at how their project might do the grid differently. Their project is a rare opportunity to build from scratch on a site that will be owned and managed by one organisation: the housing co-op, jointly owned by all residents.

We are holding a public meeting at 2pm, Sunday April 22nd at Clements Hall on Nunthorpe Road YO23 1BW. Come along to hear experts talking about lessons from the present and join the discussion on how we might build an energy community fit for the future.

Speaking at the event will be:

Both Carbon Co-op and LEDA have extensive experience of low impact residential new build across the region. Lancaster’s is one of many existing custom-built co-housing developments around the country. Their community has a ‘microgrid’, meaning that the co-operative buys and sells electricity as if it was one household. It is also connected to a nearby hydropower scheme on the River Lund.

Entrance to the event is free but donations toward covering the costs are gratefully received.
