Event description

Description

The Meteor warmly invites you to join us as we discuss the next steps in our mission to establish ourselves as Manchester’s Independent Media.

The mainstream media is failing people currently. In a climate where editorial budgets are constantly shrinking due to ever-dwindling revenue sources drying up, even local media often don’t have the resources, time, space or willingness to give a voice to people in our communities who do not have the means to pay to get their voice heard.

At The Meteor, we want to share more of these untold stories from all areas of Manchester’s rich and varied communities. We believe that changing our operating model to a co-operative will help us achieve this.

After the successful completion of our Centre for Investigative Journalism funded training course, our focus now moves to getting the co-operative up and running, and we will be having a gathering of interested parties to share ideas, assess some strengths and weaknesses and gauge the level of commitment people can offer, as well as setting in place the precedent for the more regular meetings to put these plans into action.

We are looking to follow in the footsteps of media co-operatives such as the Bristol Cable and The Ferret (from Edinburgh), whilst retaining our Mancunian idiosyncrasies, to really create an independent media that Manchester so thoroughly deserves.

We will make The Meteor an organisation that serves to benefit all areas of the community, ethically and socially whilst creating a sustainable model that means we can move towards fair remuneration for our contributors, writers and editors.

And for that we need your help and guidance.

Our ranks are swelling with the multiple talents of our 2018 course graduates, and many of you may have noticed an increase in the variety and quantity of our output, and without meaning to be greedy, we want more.

We want input from anybody who thinks they can help us in any way as we embark upon this stage in our mission. We want people from all walks of life to come and get involved, all ages, all cultural backgrounds.

  • Do you have experience of setting up a co-op? Or do you have knowledge of the potential hurdles we might face?
  • Do you have knowledge of the needs of a particular community or communities in Manchester?
  • Do you want to help guide our decision making in the future?
  • Do you have business acumen and contacts that we could benefit from?
  • Do you want to help us define our advertising and revenue ethos?

All of these aspects and more are all things that need defining and discussing, and we have to start somewhere, so this meeting is that.

Please note: due to venue capacity, places are limited, so please sign up to secure your place. If we run out of places, we will hold a second meeting so that everyone’s voices can be heard.
