About this event

*Booking opens at 4.30pm on Tuesday 26th May*

As part of our mission to help you get up close and personal with the fabric of your home, we are starting a new Materials Library drawing session. Carve out an hour on a Monday afternoon to come together to draw and contemplate materials with Institute of Making director Zoe and the Materials Librarian Sarah Wilkes.

Exercises will include quick-fire drawing with a ‘spinning surprise’ from Zoe’s personal materials collection, as well as drawing by feel and by sight only to explore how shutting down one of your senses affects your perceptions and draughtmanship.

No experience or skill necessary, all welcome!

To take part in the session you will need:

  • 3 materials or objects from around your home.
  • Something to draw with (whatever drawing materials you have).
  • Something to draw on (there’s no right or wrong medium: a pad of paper, back of an envelope or inside a cereal packet).

The Materials Library is a collection of some of the most wondrous materials on earth, gathered from sheds, labs, grottoes and repositories around the world. It is a resource, laboratory, studio, and playground for the curious and material-minded to conduct hands-on research through truly interdisciplinary inquiry and innovation. The collection is accessible to Institute of Making members day to day, and to the public at Materials Library events.

On the use of Zoom: We are using Zoom as a third party in order to enable our online knitting circles but please be aware that there are concerns about Zoom's approach to privacy. Users of Zoom should ensure that they have read and understand Zoom’s privacy policy. In any case, we recommend using the web-based version of Zoom rather than using the app, which allows greater control of the information shared with the provider. We will keep looking into our use of Zoom for online events as well as weighing up other video calling options.

Organiser Institute of Making

Organiser of Public Online Workshop: Materials Library Drawing

The Institute of Making is a multidisciplinary research club for those interested in the made world: from makers of molecules to makers of buildings, synthetic skin to spacecraft, soup to diamonds, socks to cities. Annual membership of the institute is available to all UCL staff and students.

Our programme of symposia, masterclasses and public events explores the links between academic research and hands-on experience, and celebrates the sheer joy of stuff.
Its mission is to provide all makers with a creative home in which to innovate, contemplate and understand all aspects of materials and an inspiring place to explore their relationship to making.

At the heart of the Institute of Making is the Materials Library – a growing repository of some of the most extraordinary materials on earth, gathered together for their ability to fire the imagination and advance conceptualisation. A place in which makers from all disciplines can see, touch, research and discuss, so that they can apply the knowledge and experience gained to their own practice.

Alongside the collection is the MakeSpace – a workshop where members and guests can make, break, design and combine both advanced and traditional tools, techniques and materials.
