Do you work with designing public services? Do you work in the public sector? Or do you simply have an interest in the design of public services?

If so, do come along to the Public Sector Design Community Meet Up on the 24 April at St Vincent Plaza in Glasgow.

Topic: User Research War Stories

Inspired by the Doorbells, Danger, and Dead Batteries book by Steve Portigal, this event is about sharing personal accounts from challenging aspects of our work, and working out how to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Format: Open panel discussion

Speakers will provide war stories based on themes. The themes are designed to unpack further specific insights and learnings.

As well as the speakers discussing their War stories with each other, attendees will be able to contribute their insights ask the panel and each other questions so that a lively discussion is formed.

Not all plans work, discussion guides can bomb, wrong methodologies can be chosen etc.


This could include stories about recruiters, researchers, participants, stakeholders, culture, health, etc.

Services and organisations

The systems around us – services, IT & tech, budget, to name a few.

Policy and society

Laws, rules, regulations, values and assumptions.


Places, built environment, transport, infrastructure.

About the Public Sector Design Community:

What is it?

The Public Sector Design Community is an informal gathering taking place around Scotland where people can:

  • Learn from one another – build professional skills, e.g. challenges, different approaches, best practices.
  • Build community and networks – understand who is doing what, identify opportunities to work together.
  • Share what we have learnt – share stories and experiences of various aspects of designing public services in Scotland.

Who is it for?

Anyone who:

  • Is working for the public sector, and is involved in designing public services.’
  • Has an interest in the field of designing public services.

What is the value?

  • This is a free event and a great opportunity to discuss common challenges and ideas with peers, outside of your normal working day.
  • It is a network of support to learn from, and challenge outlooks and roles.

Late policy

Our staff will be on hand for registration 10 minutes prior to the event and 10 minutes post-event. Please ensure you arrive in time for the event to begin.
