Event description
A highly successful training programme for academic researchers seeking to transform their talks and presentations.

About this Event

Polly Tisdall is an award-winning traditional storyteller and theatre director with eight years’ experience in the theatre and performance industry. Public Speaking is her highly successful training programme for academic researchers seeking to transform their talks and presentations into engaging and memorable experiences: effectively communicating their complex research to diverse audiences, demonstrating their public engagement and increasing their impact.

This session introduces participants to storytelling and its application to the communication of academic research. Participants will be introduced to how a sense of story can enrich both the structure of their content and their delivery. The first half of the session will introduce practical exercises and creative approaches designed to hone participants’ use of body language, voice, gesture, tone, volume, pace and pause and will uncover how these elements can engage an audience. The second half will use traditional story structures as a starting point to consider how to structure engaging academic content. Bringing awareness to these key skills, the session allows participants to reconsider the potential of their body and their voice to communicate their work. It provides each researcher time and space to practically apply storytelling and theatre approaches to their own research, testing their new skills on an excerpt of one of their own talks or lectures and presenting a short section to the group. Participants will explore character, conflict, tension and emotional impact to identify the story of their specific research and will have the opportunity to workshop, and receive feedback on, the delivery of a section of this research to a small audience.
