About this event

Guildford has had a great number of pubs over the ages. For hundreds of years the number was never less than 20 and at one point there were over 30 in the High Street alone! Local breweries were established to service the high demand.

Guildford was also famous for its Coaching Inns, and these flourished as the London-Portsmouth Turnkpike developed. The Inns were also centres of society for the local elite and their political parties. On the other hand, Guildford had several Temperance Hotels too! These were sometimes seen as a challenge by the publicans and their supporters.

Please note that the tour is about the history of the pubs and inns. Sorry, but we don't lead groups inside any licensed premises or organise menus!

The walk is about a half a mile long with regular stops, and about 90 minutes in duration. You should wear suitable clothing for the prevailing weather conditions.

'The ale houses were a vital facility in the town, especially on market day. In Guildford in 1570s, they were required to display the sign of a woolsack, rather than the pub signs that we know today.'

- Paul, a town guide
