Adulterers and Fornicators: Penance Records in the Norwich Consistory Court Archive by Jonathan Draper
About this event
IN-PERSON EVENT
Thanks to the support of the Norfolk Archives and Heritage Development Foundation, and the help of a team of volunteers, the NRO has recently conserved and catalogued a box of eighteenth-century penance records. Relating to the punishments given by the main church court in Norfolk and Suffolk, they provide a wonderful insight into the relationship between the established church and the lives of ordinary people. As a result we now have a greater understanding of how the church courts worked and have uncovered many interesting stories.
All in-person events have been subject to a COVID risk assessment. If you are visiting the Norfolk Record Office we ask that you please take note of the following:
• Please consider wearing a facemask if encouraged to do so by staff (the use of facemasks will be advised for events with over 30 attendees)
• Use hand sanitizer on entering the building/room
• Do not attend an event if you have any COVID-19 symptoms
In return we will do the following:
• Provide facemasks for anyone without one (in the case of events of over 30 people)
• Clean touch points before the session starts
• Open the windows in the room to allow for good air circulation
