Event description

Description

Did you know that the experiences your puppy has in the first 8- 14 weeks life can have a dramatic effect upon shaping your dog’s future? The social encounter your puppy has with other puppies and people during this time need to positive, controlled and not frightening, and the pre-school classes have been developed to help your puppy have the best start in life!

  • Behavioural evidence has shown that poorly controlled puppy “parties” can result in behavioural changes later in life. There is an increase in pet shop puppy parties with mixed ages which are not necessarily well controlled which can lead to later development of fear aggression. Avoidance is an early warning indicator that the “puppy party” is not an enjoyable place to be!

  • Supervision is vital for our pre-school puppies! We can recognise the difference between play and aggression is essential. It is a tragedy when a reticent puppy is frightened by over excited pups leaping onto or over them — possibly creating immediate and long-term learning regarding the need for defensive responses.

  • Many puppies which attend mixed age puppy classes/parties get quickly out of their depth due to the varying confidence levels in the group. This is especially true if puppies are off lead and allowed to play without proper supervision and control. At an early age the damage can be permanent.

Our pre-school puppies are as special to us and they are for you! We care about the emotional development of the puppies. Our classes are not puppy parties! The social encounters are calm, interspersed with short opportunities for controlled play (and we have a fabulous puppy indoor playground!) and learning how to engage and play with you! This helps you to develop a lovely bond with your puppy. Most importantly, it is essential that shy or socially neutral puppies entering a puppy class do not leave it having learned that other puppies can be unpredictable and possibly frightening.

The classes offer the opportunities for the puppies to learn about breeds of dogs that do not look like the puppy’s mother or siblings, to become accustomed to their methods of signalling and to experience the different play styles that may be associated with different breeds. Classes also enable puppies to meet a range of humans who may look, smell, or move in a manner that is different to their breeders and owners. This helps young animals, with the innate self-preservation skill of discrimination, to widen their concept of individuals with whom they can relax and remain calm.

We try to allow puppies to play in emotionally matched pairs; initially we play with the puppies for a short period individually to establish how robust a puppy’s play technique may be and what style of play it adopts, e.g. whether it likes to use its paws to pounce onto pups. This enables appropriate puppy pairs to be selected. (You might have guesses by know how much we LOVE playing with puppies!)

Our environment is designed to be calm, yet stimulating- with our awesome ball pit, tunnels and places to hide, an abundance of toys and stimulating interactive toys all designed for the puppies to have a rewarding experience.

As well as the environment and other puppies, meeting and greeting new humans is a new adventure to! Puppies also need to develop their people skills, which may not come naturally. Learning how people should interact with your puppy helps you to develop the skills to help your puppy cope with the over whelming approaches by the puppy loving public!

Come and play and learn in a safe environment with qualified and highly experience staff with a passion for providing puppies with the best start possible.
