Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming a part of our everyday lives, with large language models assisting us in producing written documents, in writing code and in summarising large bodies of information – but at what cost?
In this workshop we will take a behind the scenes look into what it takes to train and deploy machine learning models. We will focus on the physical resources required to run these models such as their electrical consumption, their production heat and the resultant energy use of these models exhibit.
These demanding requirements limit where we can use such models and so we must find ways to reduce their consumption of physical resources. This is never truer than within our national security mission where our use of artificial intelligence is constrained by size, weight and power.
From conventional hardware optimised to run smaller models on portable devices, to the more experimental involving computers inspired by the human brain, we will hear about a variety of approaches which aim to reduce the power consumption of machine learning models
