‘Put Your Maps to Work’ is the official ArcGIS slogan. We want to enable participants to network over mapping, to share their experience and profit from professional knowledge exchange. The introduction to ArcGIS (10.3) will be a training event specifically tailored to the needs of Arts and Humanties students and directed to the PGR community of all the M3C institutions.

Training will take place at the School of Geography of the University of Nottingham, where four three-hour workshops (each with a 30-minute networking break) will be delivered. It is designed to teach the fundamentals of the program which can then be used for our own research purposes. At the end of the four workshops, each attendee will receive a certificate of participation.

  1. Introduces student to setting up ArcGIS and setting the map parameters as well as adding the pieces of data to create a map of Britain

  1. Displaying variables
  2. Performing attribute queries and spatial queries
  3. Calculating a viewshed
  4. Least Cost Path

Workshop - May 10, 2017:

2. Practical Component: Producing Maps using GIS
  1. Selecting your symbols
  2. Layout view and labelling your Map
  3. Exporting Maps
  4. Understanding Projection

Workshop - May 17, 2017
1. Lecture Component: QGIS and Open Software
2. Practical Component: Working with your Data
  1. Setting up QGIS on your computer
  2. How to input data into QGIS
  3. Your Geodata and Your Maps

Each day consists of two main parts:

14:00-15:15: Lecture Component

15:15-15:45: Tea Break

16:45-17:00: Practical Component

FAQs

I am not a M3C student, can I participate?

Yes! The course is open to all postgraduate students of the involved institutions. However, there some places reserved for M3C funded students. When booking, make sure you select the right type of ticket. If you fail to do so, your booking may be cancelled.

What happens if the tickets are sold out?

You can be added to the wating list. If someone renounces or if the reserved places are not sold out, you will be released a ticket. In that case you will have 2 days to complete your registration.

Can I just attend for one day?

No. The course consists of 4 sessions and you must attend them all.

How can I reach the School of Geography?

The School of Geography is located at the University Park Campus. The campus can easily be reached with public transport. Click here for directions. You can also download the campus map, the School of Geography is in the building 16.

Note: M3C Students might be eligible for travel expenses reinbursment. Check on Student Guidance Notes about the Student Development Fund.

Will I need to bring anything with me?

A portable hard-drive is necessary to store the geodata used for the exercises. Every participant should have his/her own hard-drive.
