Event description

Description

The 5 Ways to Wellbeing are widely recognised as a powerful guide to feeling good and functioning well in our everyday lives. They are social as well as individual. But what if we look at them through the lens of place and our sense of belonging to a city, a town, or a neighbourhood?

London National Park City, Shared Assets and Catherine Max are co-hosting an interactive event to answer this question.

Join us to hear from inspirational and creative Londoners with new ideas on how to integrate the 5 Ways into place, to share your own ideas, and to explore the real-life implications in conjunction with Peabody at Thamesmead .

We'll be integrating the 5 Ways - Connect, Be Active, Give, Keep Learning, Take Notice - throughout the afternoon and talking more about this on twitter using the hashtag #5WaysPlace.

If you're interested in and working on the intersections between place, wellbeing, community, culture, regeneration and health, then you should be there!

You can also read more about the thinking behind this event in Catherine's blog here.

Outline programme:

1.30 - 2pm - Networking! feel free to bring your lunch and eat it with us: tea and coffee will be provided

2pm - Introductions

2.15pm - Living Lab: hearing from people developing new projects, and wanting input, challenge and support.

  • Andy Ryan, Chief Executive, Cityread London on weaving London’s literature into the fabric of the city, and making playful connections in outdoor spaces.
  • Phillippa Banister, Founder Director, Streetspace on HerBarking, a women-led grassroots project to bring a sense of joy to the places and spaces where women currently feel unsafe and their lives constrained.
  • Grant Waters, Director and Acoustician, Tranquilcity on a holistic method of creating tranquil places that people can idle in, relax, enjoy and fit into the everyday.
  • Andrew Stuck, Founding Director, Museum of Walking, on finding and making places which are delightful or inviting for different people, be it day or night.
  • Creative Urban Activist Carole Wright, on health, art, community and place.

3.30pm - A working session in collaboration with Peabody's London's Clever Cities Action Lab. Using Thamesmead as an example, participants can share their own ideas and explore the features of place needed so that everyone can and does enjoy the 5 Ways to Wellbeing

4.30pm - Reflections from policy, research and practice

Our invited panel will reflect on what they’ve heard and offer their thoughts on how a 5 Ways approach could help change places and our experience of them for the better. Currently confirmed panellists include:

  • Vicky Hobart, Head of Health, GLA
  • Sally Kettle, Adventurer
  • Jo Birch, Research Associate, Department of Landscape, University of Sheffield
  • Nick Tyler, Chadwick Professor of Civil Engineering, University College London

Sally will be recording an episode of her new podcast at the event, and we hope that the conversations will spark new and productive partnerships and projects.

5.30pm - join us for more conversation in the pub.

Getting there

We'll be at CAN Mezzanine in Borough, a short walk from Borough Tube Station - but why not put two of the 5 Ways into practice and travel as actively as you can, taking notice of something unusual on the way? The Citymapper app can probably help you with active travel routes, but we'll look forward to hearing what you noticed when you arrive.
