If you think your Functional Skills Class students have hard core behaviour issues, in this session we’ll do so much more than overturn these thoughts. Typically it’s a challenging class, not just because of the shortness of time, but also the negative connotations connected with the ‘boring’ subjects.
This is a real opportunity to wake up your students, and attendees will have access to a bucket-load of resources.

Understand the triggers for short term behaviour problems
We look at the most common reasons for poor student behaviour and use proven approaches to eliminate them before they are even a problem
Strategies to increase student motivation and engagement
Methods to contradict the negativity and raise the aspirations of students by helping them to understand “Why do I need to know that?” and “What’s in it for me?”
Gain ideas for simple differentiation
The session takes on a pedagogical approach by providing examples of resources and an opportunity to share good practice
Use a variety of ways to use questioning for learning
Utilise many techniques with examples and demonstrations of questioning activities and how to use them in class. Extremely useful for quick formative assessment
Knowledge of the FS curriculum and subject knowledge is expected and the training does not cover this.
The trainer for this programme is Hilary Nunns. Hilary is a teacher and has taught on several Functional Skills programmes. She is known for her ability to engage students to become partners in their own education, and this is neatly transferred to the FS classroom.
